Many factors motivate MATs when they decide to grow – from cost efficiencies, to commitment to widening their care. There’s lots of things to consider when making an expansion plan – scaling fast and under pressure can bring challenges and risk the quality of provision. As new trusts are forming and expanding all the time, a top priority for MAT leaders is growing sustainably.

There’s much discussion out there about the best way for MATs to scale. It’s a topic that we’ve talked about a lot with the 90 MATs we’ve onboarded to Arbor and continue to work closely with. As we wrote about in our MAT Growth blog series, we’ve seen that the most successful growing MATs are aligned on vision and values, and have common processes and systems, including their Management Information System (MIS), HR System and Finance System.

There are lots of resources out there to help MATs as they scale. The MAT Improvement Capacity Framework is a useful tool for trusts to measure their strengths and identify areas to improve so that they can grow and take on new schools. The DfE also sets out guidance on what RSCs (Regional School Commissioners) look for when approving trusts expansion plans.

However, the best way to learn is often from others. For all trusts wanting to grow their network of schools, being part of a community of fellow MAT leaders can be really valuable – it helps you pool resources and share best practice.

Helping to grow a community of school and MAT leaders focused on transforming the way they work is a key part of our mission, which is why we’re excited to announce our fifth MAT Leader Conference in London very soon! Hosted at Kings Place on 27th March, our free event “Scaling your MAT Sustainably” is designed to give trust leaders across the country an opportunity to come together and learn from each other. You’ll hear from MAT CEOs and Senior Leaders about how they’ve scaled their strategy, operations, central team process, systems, reporting, governance and culture. Also on the programme will be a series of open and honest group discussions between MAT COOs who will share their experience of scaling different sized MATs.

Organised in partnership with Smoothwall, and with thanks to IMP Software, the conference will build on the success of our previous MAT Conferences in London and Manchester over the past two years, attended by over 250 Executive Leaders representing 150 MATs nationally. With over 100 delegates from MATs across the country expected to attend, it’ll be a great chance to meet other like-minded MAT CEOs and Senior Leaders. There will be lunch and plenty of breaks during which you can network, talk best practice and discuss how you’ve scaled your trusts.

We can now announce our confirmed speakers for the event! Previous speakers have included Debbie Clinton (CEO, Academy Transformation Trust), Rich Davies (Director of Insight, Ark Schools), Paul James (CEO, River Learning Trust), Richard Sherrif (CEO, Red Kite Learning Trust and more. We’ll be announcing speakers and a programme for this year’s conference soon, so keep an eye out for announcements from us over the coming weeks.

Last year’s conference sold out fast, so make sure you get your free ticket. Look forward to seeing you there!
